6 Out Of 10 Irish People Want Neutrality Enshrined in Irish Constitution

A recently commissioned Red C Poll has shown that 6 out of 10 Irish people want Neutrality to be enshrined in the Constitution.  At present, Irish Neutrality is a policy choice, decided on by the Government of the day.

The Poll also finds that 57% of the Irish people oppose the United States use of Shannon Airport for Military Transit Purposes, this figure excludes the 'Don't Knows' which are at 4%.

This week, the acting Taoiseach Enda Kenny visits US President Barack Obama, and it is imperative that he raises the concerns of the Irish people, regarding the ongoing militarisation of much of the world, and the impact of same. This Red C Poll has shown that over half the Irish population do not agree with Ireland's current military relationship with the United States, which sees Shannon Airport used as a forward airbase for the US Military. A Press Conference will be held tomorrow at 2.30pm, in Buswells Hotel, Tuesday 15th March to discuss the findings.

Speaking on the findings of the Poll, Clare Daly TD made the point that - "A country with a policy of positive neutrality would not facilitate the massive, devastating displacement of tens of millions of people through wars whose only purpose is to keep the gears of the military-industrial complex oiled. It would not find itself in a state of absolute moral abjection when it agreed to accept only the tiniest fraction of those made homeless and stateless by wars it had abetted. We need to put meat on the bones of our neutrality, to actively and vigorously work against war and destruction, against the arms trade, against the absolute devastation of so many lives in pursuit of imperial power and wealth? Until we enshrine a policy of neutrality in our Constitution, and make it so that our neutrality is something that is real, positive, and active, we cannot and will not play that role".

Mick Wallace TD stated - "Since 2001, the US Military and their allies have been responsible for the deaths of over 2 million citizens in Afghanistan and Iraq alone. Mindless destruction of the Middle East region & beyond has seen the displacement of over 30 million people and an unprecedented refugee crisis in Europe today. It's long past time that Ireland stopped facilitating this horror by refusing to allow Shannon Airport to be used for any military purposes. We need a change of direction - It should start with the new Government. It's time for Ireland to work for peace, not war."

Ed Horgan of Shannonwatch states that " Shannon airport has been used, or misused by the US military, with the approval of successive Irish Government's since October 2001. In the meantime over three million armed US troops have transited through Shannon on their way to and from wars and military operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Syria and elsewhere. In addition US military aircraft have transported unknown quantities of munitions and other war materials through Shannon airport but the Irish Government has been repeatedly denying that these aircraft are carrying weapons and munitions. Irish neutrality needs to be urgently restored to prevent Irish complicity in crimes against humanity".

Dr John Lannon of the University of Limerick and Shannonwatch stated that - "Ireland's failure to uphold national and international law at Shannon is shameful. The routine transit of armed troops to and from war zones is in contravention of the Hague Convention on Neutrality. The authorities have failed in their responsibilities under the Convention Against Torture by not investigating rendition planes at Shannon. And they also turn a blind eye to the fact that the US military aircraft landing at Shannon are likely to be carrying people who are guilty of war crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. Under the principle of international jurisdiction, these should be investigated and prosecuted".

Sinn Fein Change of Position on Irish Water - Fianna Fail says a most extraordinary statement

RTE, 'This Week', informed the public that despite Sinn Fein signing up to the Right2Change policy of abolishing Irish Water and setting up a new national water board,  Eoin OBroin, Sinn Fein spokesperson told the programme that his party sees no obvious alternative to Irish Water at present which is why they want to launch an independent commission to find out the best model.

Mr O'Broin went on to say " I haven't heard anybody outline a detailed or credible alternative to Irish Water.  I know there are sketchy proposals made by other parties.  That's why we think its best to have a commission to design the best possible model.

When questioned if he would accept the commission's recommendations, Mr O'Broin said " if the independent commission comes back and says Irish Water is the best model after all and should be retained, I would be surprised,  but if you set up an independent commission to look into it, then I think there is a responsibility to accept it's findings".

Fianna Fail response
Sean Fleming, Fianna Fail spokesperson, when asked what he thought of Sinn Fein's proposal, said that " it is the most extraordinary statement I have heard in the last month from anybody.  Pearse Doherty had a motion in the Dail during the past week to close down Irish Water.  Now we have a newly elected Sinn Fein TD saying  they are not doing that and that they want an independent commission.  One is contradicting the other."

SIPTU
Adrian Kane of SIPTU representing the workers in Irish Water said they are going to resist any tampering with IW .  Interestingly Mr Kane stated that closing down Irish Water "would be a disaster for the country".

However, there was no mention of Irish Water's own plans for 1200 redundancies.

March 11, 2016 - thousands in Derbyshire England warned not to use high chlorine water

On March 11 the BBC News ran a story 'Thousands of residents warned not to use 'high chlorine' water.  It reported

"Severn Trent has warned thousands of customers not to use water while it investigates problems with high levels of chlorine in its supply.

The company said it is investigating an issue at the Castle Donington reservoir in Derbyshire.

It has told residents in the DE11, DE15, DE65, DE73 and LE65 areas of Derbyshire and Leicestershire not to use water for any purpose.

A total of 3,700 properties have been affected."

The Daily Mail story

On the same day March 11, The Daily Mail Online also reported on the issue givena more comprehensive explanation and information.

'Contaminated water supply triggers panic buying after thousands of households are warned not to drink or wash with it - and it's even too toxic to clean TOILETS'.
The article continued

  • Severn Trent Water warned many customers in Derbyshire, Leicestershire
  • As many as 3,700 homes could have been affected by the chlorine problem
  • Water company did not disclose exact chlorine levels, how problem began
  • Superstores, local shops in the area completely sold out of bottled water

Earlier today, Severn Trent spokesman Jonathan Smith warned locals not to use tap water in any capacity, adding: 'Don't drink it, don't wash with it, don't even brush your toilet with it.'

Up to 0.7mg of chlorine per 1litre of water is considered safe, but Smith told MailOnline he could not disclose the levels found in the Castle Donington reservoir.

He said: 'There is more chlorine than there should be in the water... We can't give you the levels that are in the water.

'We don't know if the level will be high enough that it will do damage to your skin.'

When asked if Severn Trent knew what caused the high chlorine levels, Mr Smith said: 'No, we have to look at that in detail.'

He said the systems should be flushed by midday tomorrow and claimed people will have safe running water by evening time.

But the lack of information given out to residents has concerned many, with one mother, Maria Fowler, tweeting: 'Will this affect my pregnancy? Slightly concerned as I have been drinking the water?'

Mother of two Sarah Yarnall, 34, of Woodville, Derbyshire, tweeted Severn Water at 7pm to ask if she was in the affected area.

Her husband Lee Shakespeare, 39, only found out about the water issue when his children's school texted him.

HEALTH HAZARDS OF HIGH CHLORINE LEVELS IN DRINKING WATER

Chlorine is used to purify water and although low levels of the substance in the water is harmless, the chemicals it can create are known to cause cancer.

Chlorine can react with substances in the water supply to produce compounds known as disinfection byproducts (DBPs), according to a study by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

It said the main byproducts, trihalomethanes (THMs), are mostly responsible for health hazards.

The agency added the compound 'mainly slows down regular brain activity' and prolonged exposure 'can cause liver and kidney cancer, as well as heart disease, unconsciousness, or death in high doses'.

Severn Trent Spokesperson levels of chlorine higher than a swimming pool

Severn Trent said they have 'cut off the service' to the reservoir where the problem was observed.
Principal inspector Sue Pennison said earlier today: 'The normal level in a swimming pool is between two and four micrograms – this is a little bit higher than that.'
The company is now in the process of 'flushing the pipes' at the reservoir so the contaminated water is washed out.
'This will take as long as it takes for us to be 100 per cent certain that our customers are safe,' Mr Smith told Sky News earlier today.
