Galway Boil Water Notice Highlights Once Again The Politics of Water

Why are the people of Ireland not up in arms, insisting that they be told the truth about their drinking water?  The truth that there are cancer causing chemicals in our drinking water and that over 1 million us are consuming it?   The truth that coming into contact with these carcinogenic chemicals is adding substantially to our risk of cancer.  The truth that the Irish Government, Irish Water, the EPA and HSA all know abouttrihalomethanes chemicals and their links to cancer.

The Government know the truth and theyknow that it is caused by adding chlorine to water.  However, they prefer to keep it quiet.

In fact they were advised by the European Commission in 2007 that it was not the right method to use and that it could cause worse problems.  And this is exactly what has come to pass.   It is the reaction of chlorine and organic matter in the water that causes, among other things, Thrihalomethane (THMs).

(See EU Commission warned Ireland Not to add chlorine)

Boiling water increases the concentrations of Trihalomethanes

The Big Question Is Who Made That Decision?

Whether it was a combination of years of neglect, penny pinching or it was a race to comply with Europe's Water Framework Directive,  Ireland's water quality and its state of the art treatment system are years behind what the Government are telling Europe.

The government took wrong decision by ignoring the Commission's advice in 2007 that chlorine was the wrong way to go for Ireland.

The big question is who made that decision?  (read our article Here covering this and information on trihalomethanes and other chemicals)

Whoever made the decision to ignore Europe and take the cheaper chlorination route has a lot to answer.  It has been all downhill since then with outbreaks of Cryptosporidiums and Trihalomethanes in the water supply.  Instead of admitting the mistake and taking sound advice from Europe not to add chlorine, the government and our monitoring agencies decided to continue with the approach.  In this recalcitrant way they cooked the books, fooling the Irish people and took advantage of the bureaucratic nature of the EU.  Their expensive reports were like the water itself,  outwardly crystal clear but on scrutiny totally contaminated.

Government Do Not Want To Mention Cancer but Cry Bacteria

The government and Irish Water are scaring the public with the big bacterial bug but are hiding the fact that the their so called remedy is worse.  What is worse is the fact that they are responsible in the first place for not heeding Europe.  To cover up they are fooling the public by media articles, (code reds),  telling the public that they are doing everythingto provide safe drinking water.  Trust them they are experts.

But there is even worse.  What they are telling us to do, i.e 'Boil Notice' may kill the bacteria but it will intensify the trihalomethanes, in turn putting our health further at risk.  They do not want to mention THMs or cancer.  No they do not want to go down that road.  Instead they cry bacteria and they don't mention the skeleton in the closet.

Irish Cancer Figures

The below figures are taken from www.cancer.ie.  The reason we are publishing them is to counteract the argument that Cryptosporidiosis is somehow less than trihalomethanes.

  • Cancer accounts for over one-quarter of the annual death toll.

  • Cancer is the second most common cause of death in Ireland.

  • The most recent figures show that 8,585 people died from cancer in 2009.

  • We sourced this data from the Central Statistics Office.

The following is taken form the Irish Examiner, Jan, 2011

"IRELAND has some of the highest cancer rates in the world.  Figures compiled by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) show Ireland’s cancer rates are continuing to dwarf those in other regions.
According to the findings, based on age-standardised 2008 WHO statistics, at 317 cases per 100,000 people, this country currently has the second highest diagnoses of all forms of cancer out of 50 nations analysed worldwide. These figures put us below only Denmark at 326 cases per 100,000.
In the women-only category Ireland has 285 cases per 100,000 people, placing us as the country with the third highest cancer rate behind Denmark (325) and New Zealand (287).
Among men the figure stands at 356 per 100,000, again placing us in third place behind French metropolitan areas (361) and Australia (361)

Galway Boil Water Notice Greates further Health Risks

The following is a statement from Tony Lowes, Friends of the Irish Environment, Mar 09, 2016.

"Trihalomethane’s [THMs], carcinogenic chemicals have created an additional health risk to water consumers in Carraroe, County Galway because of Irish Water’s 'Boil Water' notice. The Carraroe group water scheme is recorded as exceeding the WHO/EU limits in 4 of the last 5 water quality tests.

THMs are a group of more than 60 chemicals, including chloroform which is classed as a carcinogen, created in drinking water as a result of reaction between organic materials, such as peaty soil, to chlorine added as a disinfectant.

It is universally accepted that THMs are volatile chemicals that present a specific and particular danger through inhalation. Yet this is exactly what Irish Water has instructed consumers to do by bringing the water to a “vigorous, rolling boil”

Absorption through the skin and inhalation of THMs associated with everyday tap water use such as showering can result in ‘THM blood concentrations rising 5- to 15-fold, according to USA study.

FIE is not suggesting that Irish Water stop chlorinating the water before the infrastructure is rationalised, but it borders on the criminal to instruct consumers to boil the water without informing them of the necessary precautions, including ensuring adequate ventilation to protect themselves and their family from inhaling the dangerous chemicals released from boiling THM-laden water. An EPA Direction issued to Irish Water required completion of works including filtration and UV to address cryptosporidium in this supply by 30/11/15.’

FIE is continuing its campaigning to have consumers informed directly on their bills of exceedances of the WHO/EU permitted level of THMs in their water supplies."

Are we missing something?

Maybe the newly elected Teachtaí Dála are more preoccupied with affairs of state, thinking about 'the good of the country', more like a euphemism for 'ourselves' than to bother with minutia of trihalomethanes and our drinking water.  Maybe they don't bother to look at the small print whilst in committees, sitting in their soft leather seats and instead rubber stamp anything that comes their way.  In either case the people of Ireland are not being served.

Irish Water, EPA, HSA and Government Cover Ups and Misiformation Lead to Massive Water Problems

Irish Water, the Environmental Potection Agency along wity the Health and Safety Authority in Ireland have conned the public into thinking that they have to chlorinate to protect drinking water quality from microbiological contamination.

Startling new revelations uncovered by Friends of the Irish Environment about Trihalomethanes, a cancerous causing chemical in our drinking water has put all agencies responsible for our drinking water in the spotlight.

Not only are these chemicals caused by a reaction to chlorine being added to the water, but it is now known that the above agencies and our government knew about the problems and the risks of taking this chlorine option.

Irish Water's biggest lie

Tony Lowes, Director of Friends of the Irish Environment,  holds no punches when it comes to laying the blame for the massive problems today with our drinking water.  He attributes it to the stance  Ireland's regulatory bodies, Irish Water and the Government have taken and has described it as 'Irish Water's Biggest Lie'.

Mr Lowes does not accept the official line and says it is a con to say that it would be dangerous and irresponsible to stop chlorinating  in order to avoid what they class as a 'minor'   by-product of disinfecting with chlorine.    He says that the by product can create more than 60 chemicals classed as  trihalomenthanes, THMs.

Irish Water and supporters are pushing the line ‘The real risk of inadequate chlorination outweighs the risk associated with THMs and should be avoided’. ‘We can’t risk public health!’ they say accusing interfering environmentalists like ourselves and  Erin Brockovitch of ‘scaremongering’.

After a complaint from a resident in Ballycroy County Mayo in 1998 which triggered an EU Environmental Compliance investigation,  Ireland was condemned by the European Court of Justice on  November 14 2002 over the microbiological contamination of hundreds of public and private water supplies.

EU Commission Warned Ireland not to add Chlorine

The EU's Drinking Water Directive requires an absence of e.coli in drinking water supplies in order to protect human health. These bacteria point to a high risk of human pathogens being present.  In 2007 Ireland received a final written warning for not complying with that judgment. After Ireland chose chlorine as an answer to the problem,  the Commission warned them privately that chlorine was not really suitable for Ireland – that two of the biggest threats both biologically and chemically to Irish water are not addressed by chlorine – cryptosporidium and Trihalomethanes.  However, the Commission stance that the method by which a member state addresses a judgment of the court is left to the member state’s discretion.

New York City, for example, protects its water sources so carefully that most of it does not even require filtration and minimal chlorine is used only in conjunction with UV light which inactivates harmful microorganisms but does not change the water chemically since nothing is added except energy.

Carcinogens are being created by method used by Irish Water

Irish water is creating these chemicals by using the wrong kind of disinfectant for our surface waters.  These chemicals were not there before Irish Water got its hands on it.  The unsuspecting public are  paying the price now for the refusal of the Irish State to listen to good advice.  Instead the state took the ‘cheap’ and easy way out.

Mr Lowes said  "The Irish State has been putting your health at unnecessary risk.  Alternative methods of disinfection like UV light and filtration systems would have rendered the current water treatment structure obsolete (as it has transpired to be), so requiring more money and higher maintenance – with chlorine, you just chuck it in. All the Commission could do and did with diligence was to pursue Ireland relentlessly to at least install chlorine meters, as chlorine is a poison and as they say in the trade, ‘poison is in the dose’.
o it’s NOT a question of chlorine OR THMs. Chlorine does not stop cryptosporidium. And it actually creates THMs. Don’t believe their lie."

Row brewing on Facebook with Fine Gael's Kate O'Connell TD deleting questions on Fluoride

Today March 4, 2016 there was a post on Facebook from Dawn Kelly accusing Fine Gael's Kate O'Connell, TD of deleting her questions and comments over O'Connell's post ridiculing anti fluoride arguments in Dublin City Council.  What is interesting about this controversy is that it highlights the issues of Fluoride in our drinking water.  It also shows how advocates of fluoride manipulate the facts.    In this case it is a Fine Gael newly elected TD Kate O'Connell, shown in the video below arrogantly dismissing and belittling fellow Councillors who dared voice concerns about Irish Government's policy of fluoridating drinking water.

Kate O'Connell,  Fine Gael TD won seat in Dublin Bay South, Feb 2016 election.  She was elected to Dublin City Council in 2014 for FG.

Ms O'Connell,  in the video below, seems to assume a  rather doctrinaire attitude, waving away the opposition as irritants and  alluding to her profession as a chemist to emphasise her credentials.  It is a bit like Oppenheimer  saying that nuclear tests are not harmful to humans.   What the actions of O'Connell also highlight is once again an example of political parties reneging on elections promises.  Read the Irish Independent article link below.

Dawn Kelly's Statement

Kate O'Connell TD has just BLOCKED me from her page!
Last night, I commented on her video about water flouridation.   I asked some reasonable questions and shared this link. FG back in 2001 promising to ban flouride in drinking water. http://www.independent.ie/…/fg-election-promise-to-ban-fluo…

Instead of responding she deleted my comments. So, this morning I asked again . Instead of her responding she has blocked me from commenting on her page and again deleted my comments.

What a totally outlandish way for an elected member of government to behave. A newly elected one I might add. If you can't answer simple questions who exactly are you supposed to represent. I am furious that she thinks this is an appropriate way to behave.

Dawn's deleted question
"It's me again.  You deleted my comments last night.  But to remind you ......  I asked your to back up what you said about Fluoride not being harmful. You also go against your own party's stance,  (see Independent article)  There have been many studies carried out on the toxicity of water fluoridation and it's harmful effects.  i also asked you to reply without being patronising or condescending as you have been in the comments on this thread.  Instead you chose to hit delete.  I find it hard to believe that this video is for anyone's 'Entertainment' as you put it.  This is a serious health issue and should not be made light of.  I am most interested in you explaining why your party, back in 2001 made an election promise to ban fluoride from drinking water based on medical grounds.  Are you telling me that your party is misinformed and doesn't know what they are talking about?  Do you mean to say that you know better?  Do you know better than the rest of the EU and many other countries who have banned this practice.   I understand that you are a pharmacist and while I respect that you will have more knowledge than some others on that panel, there are many, many others around the world who I am sure would be happy to debate with you on the topic if you were willing to listen.  I find your complete denial of the harmful effects of fluoride baffling."

50 Reasons To Oppose Fluoridation

See http://fluoridealert.org/articles/50-reasons/

In Europe, only Ireland (73%), Poland (1%), Serbia (3%), Spain (11%), and the U.K. (11%) fluoridate any of their water. Most developed countries, including Japan and 97% of the western European population, do not consume fluoridated water.

In the U.S., about 70% of public water supplies are fluoridated. This equates to approximately 185 million people, which is over half the number of people drinking artificially fluoridated water worldwide. Some countries have areas with high natural fluoride levels in the water. These include India, China and parts of Africa. In these countries measures are being taken to remove the fluoride because of the health problems that fluoride can cause.
